Food Photography Tips

Food photography is slowly gaining popularity as restaurants want to advertise their food and it is certainly one of the most challenging photography out there. Every food photographs you see in magazines is neatly arranged and kept in a creative manner so that it looks presentable. Food photography might sound very complicated, but you can master it once you get the hang of it. The following are some of the tips you can use to make the food tell a better story through your photo:

Choose the angle:

There are not many angles when it comes to food photography. You will have to use the same angle again and again. Once you decide which angle you want to shoot the picture, you place your camera in that position and click the photo. Before taking the photo take a look at the food that is kept in front of you and figure out which angle will be the best. Some shots are best when you take them from the top and some of better when they are shot at a side angle.

Have a good background or foreground:

When you are taking a photo from the side, you need to make sure that your photo has a good background which would enhance the quality of the picture. Try to place small nuts of flowers or whichever you think might enhance the beauty and the presentation. Setting things in the background and foreground will provide depth to the picture.

Use of light:

The use of light is significant in any photography, and you need to know how to alter the light in order to make the picture look good. Sometimes poor lighting can ruin the picture and present a bad image to the viewers. So make sure that the room has good lightings if not then you need to make sure that you create artificial lights to enhance the quality of the picture.

Use a tripod:

Sometimes you need to keep holding the camera in your hand, and there are chances that you might shake it. When you shake the camera, you will end up blurring the photo. To avoid the blur you can use a tripod or hold your camera tightly. You can also use faster shutter speed to capture the picture without much blur.

Match the colours:

Food is made up of a variety of colours, and some colours can truly lighten up the presence of your photo. Try to match the colours of the food in the plate and make them come alive in your pictures.

Watch out for the shadows:

When you try to take the photo from a top angle, there are chances that the shadows might ruin the picture. Sometimes, these shadows enhance the picture so watch out for such shadows and position the light accordingly.

Tips for Beginner Photographers

If you happen to be just starting out in photography and if you are not quite sure on where to begin you have come to the right place. The below write up will make you understand and gain more knowledge about photography.

Many people think that photography is as easy as picking up a camera and shooting a random picture. But photography has more to it than just that; there are so many techniques and procedures which you need to learn to get the perfect picture. But if you happen to be a person who loves learning such techniques you will certainly find a way to appreciate the little things in life.

To start with do not buy the most expensive camera right away:

You are just beginning to take photos, and thus you do not need a very expensive camera to take a picture. There are inexpensive cameras which take very good pictures. You need first to learn how to use a simple camera then go for an expansive camera.

Learn how the exposure triangle works:

Photography is all about capturing light in such a way that your photo will be able to tell a story. As a beginner, you need to understand three factors which affect the photo you take.

Learn about the Aperture of the lens:

Aperture is the size of the lens it is written as f/2, f/5, f/11 etc. To get a wide aperture opening, you need to make the number as small as possible. When you have a wide aperture you will be allowing more light to enter the camera and this plays a great role in the depth of field; this decides if the image will be clear or blurred.

Shutter Speed:

Shutter speed is the amount of time you lever your shutter open. Shutter speed is stated as 5sec, 1/60 sec etc. When you have a slower shutter speed, you are allowing more light to enter the camera and it is also responsible for controlling the sensitivity of motion. To capture something which is moving fast you need to have a camera which has high shutter speed.

ISO is the sensitivity of light, and they are stated in 100 ISO, 400 ISO etc. The higher the ISO, the better photos you will be able to take in a darker environment.

Get a tripod:

Sometimes your photos can get shaken if you do not hold the camera in a fixed position. To avoid such pictures, you can consider buying a tripod so that you can keep your camera at a fixed position and take good photographs.

Experiment with the settings in your camera:

There are various settings in a camera, and you need to try them out. Try to change the settings and see how pictures come out. As you experiment with the settings, you will learn about various effects.

How to Photograph Lightning

Taking pictures of the lightning is a dangerous job as it can strike anywhere. You might think that there is no chance that the lightning could ever hit your area but you can never predict its direction. It is one of the most unpredictable forces in this world and thus taking a picture of lightning is quite rewarding. The following are some of the tips to photograph lightning:

Find yourself a safe place:

One of the first things you need to do is find yourself a safe place to capture the shot. You can try to stay in a building or a car so that you will have something over your head to protect you. Do not consider taking pictures in the open area no matter how great that place might be; you also need to stand away from tall buildings and trees as the lightning which hits these objects will pass on to you.

Pick your equipment:

To capture a lightening, you cannot be holding the camera for a long time, and thus you need to carry a tripod with you. Set your camera to manual so that you can control the shutter speed and the aperture of the lens. Depending on the lightening you need to alter the shutter speed, and you can keep it between 3 and 30 seconds. Make sure that there is no shake as it will affect the sharpness of the image.

Find a good spot:

Finding the lightening or the storm is not quite hard but finding the right spot to capture the lightning is very hard to find. You need to make sure that you can get continuous shots. The background of the picture needs to be good and finally in excitement to take pictures of lightning do not get hit by one.

Be patient:

Sometimes you need to wait for hours to get the perfect shot. Try to take as much as photos as possible so that you will be able to get a nice picture. Try to stay calm and you will surely capture a great picture of the lightning.

Use a flashlight to focus the lens:

Go with a friend who can walk for about 100 feet from the camera with a flashlight, and you can focus your lens based on that light.

Make your picture interesting:

Apart from trying to capture the lightning, you need to make sure that your image has something engaging in it. Try to have a brilliant background or try to capture a building to make the photo look better.

Lightning photography can get very dangerous, and you never know where the lightning will hit. Make sure that you are accompanied by your friend or someone who can help you out with various things. Also, equip yourself with all the necessary things, and you will end up taking a good picture of the lightning.
